The Edison State Community College women's basketball team took part in the inaugural SC4 ThumbCoast Tip-Off Tournament at St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron, Michigan. Edison State was one of eight teams in the tournament, which included 12 games from Thursday, November 14, to Saturday, November 16.
"Our aim was to bring a high-level showcase for women's college basketball and community college athletics to downtown Port Huron, and with the help of the community, SC4 staff, and the amazing student-athletes and coaches who took the court this weekend, that was accomplished," SC4 President Kirk Kramer said.
The event began with a banquet featuring a keynote address by Juliene Brazinski Simpson, co-captain of the 1976 USA Women's Olympic Basketball Team and a member of the Naismith, Women's Basketball, and Polish American Sports halls of fame. Simpson gifted each coach an autographed basketball and provided every player with a photo that included a personalized message and autograph.
Although the Lady Chargers suffered a series of losses during the tournament, they gained a unique student-athlete experience while facing elite non-conference competition. The team is unlikely to face these opponents again this season, unless they meet during the NJCAA Division II championships in March 2025.
"I loved this event; I think it's great," said Edison State Head Women's Basketball Coach Tim McMahon. "I want to do it again next year. I told my players in the locker room, we're going to see these teams, and if we want to get to the next level, we have to get through these teams. You might as well see them in November so you're ready for them in February and March."
Edison State's women's basketball team competes in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) and is a Division II member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). For the latest news and upcoming games, visit athletics.edisonohio.edu.
