Miguel Velazquez, of Piqua, has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) powerhouse Sterling College in Kansas following his successful career at Edison State Community College.
"The Edison State coaching staff is very pleased to see Miguel get this opportunity to continue his education as well as his baseball career. Miguel came to us as a transfer from Murray State and he has been an excellent pickup for us," said head baseball coach Scott Jones.
In his time at Edison State, Velazquez had a .321 batting average with 19 RBI's and three home runs. "Miguel is a very consistent player with good knowledge of the game. He has been outstanding behind the plate for us this year," added Jones.
Velazquez will be the third player in the last two years to advance his baseball career beyond the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
"It feels awesome being able to continue playing baseball," said Velazquez. "The coaches at Edison State have helped me to improve my game both physically and mentally. I am very happy to have been under the command of excellent coaches."
"Sterling will not only get a very baseball player but a great person as well," added Coach Jones. "Miguel will be tough to replace. We wish him the best as he pursues his goals on and off the field."
While attending Sterling College, Velazquez will continue working toward bachelor's degree in exercise science.
The Sterling College Warriors compete in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national affiliation.
