Brent New Named Head Softball Coach at Edison State

The Edison State Community College Athletics Department is pleased to welcome former Edison State Community College assistant women's basketball coach Brent New next spring as Head Softball Coach. 

While he spent thirteen years coaching basketball at the high school and collegiate level, New is no stranger to coaching softball. In his twenty-two-year coaching career as head softball coach at Houston High School, New won 359 games, picked up ten Shelby County Athletic League Championships, won two district titles, and made an appearance at Regionals in 2016. New also coached the All-District Senior All-Star Game twice. 

"I am ready to take this step into collegiate-level softball coaching. I was head softball coach at Houston for twenty-two years and still teach there, but I felt like it was time for a change." 

New feels that coaching the women's basketball team under Head Coach Tim McMahon the last five seasons has prepared him to step into this role. 

"Spending the last five years as an assistant coach with the women's basketball team has allowed me to gain a better understanding of recruiting, making contacts, and helping players stay on track academically," said New.  

"One of my top priorities as head coach is to make sure the girls are doing everything they need to do to succeed academically. I would never want to be a hindrance for their overall progress towards earning their degree. That's the real reason they are at Edison State." 

New has high hopes for the group of student-athletes he will coach in the upcoming season. 

"The team is very talented, and I look forward to coaching them. I've known or coached against many of the girls in high school and think they are a great group of kids. Ultimately, I hope to contend for the league championship and qualify for the district tournament." 

Outside of coaching, New is an elementary teacher with Hardin-Houston Local School District. New resides in Sidney with his wife, Carie. Together they have four children, Kayla, Rebekah, Peyton, and Ethan. 

The Edison State softball team competes in Region XII as Division II members of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and as members of the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC).
